At what point should I seek for help?

Heartbreak can lead to many long term effects; depression is one. Prolonged changes in sleeping and eating habits after a breakup can also be signs and symptoms of depression.   Depression is a very serious medical condition and can lead to other issues such as suicide.

 

Although it is absolutely normal to feel sad when you're going through heartbreak, there will come a point that the feelings of sadness will stop. However, if months happen to pass and your feelings do not get better, and if you feels as if your feelings are becoming depressive, you should consult with a counselor or therapist.

 

Additional ways you may find yourself in a depressive state is if you find no interest in activities that you normally would enjoy, you isolate yourself or cry more frequently, you begin to feel irritable, or you find no need to go to school or home.   If you cannot find the same comfort of doing things you normally love, “this is a red flag that something is amiss in [your] life.”

 

There are also other situations in which you would need to consult with a doctor. For example, if you are using sex, drugs, or even food to cope and cannot control how much you take in, you may be required to go into treatment because you may be facing addiction or a compulsive disorder.   The resulting feelings and effects of heartbreak on one can vary, and be as serious as depression and addiction. It is essential for you to get the proper treatment by consulting with a doctor if and when it is needed.
